A favourite comic strip character of my childhood was Dennis the Menace’s black dog Gnasher, a mutt with a Methuselah hairstyle. Gnasher had an irreverent character that appealed to my sense of humour. Years later I was constructing a projector housing for a luminaire; a metal sphere covered in hundreds of metal dowels (second-hand craft-knife handles) and realised as the piece came together that it looked just like Gnasher. The main component of the two-part sculpture reminded me of a giant raspberry, and disrespectful children (and cartoon dogs) like ‘blowing raspberries’ at authoritarian adults. Gnasher’s Big Raspberry is an example of an inspiration for a piece bearing no relationship to the final title.
