Restless Fakir

Mixed media (reclaimed treated timber sleeper, conical diffuser, optical fibre, LED light source)

When I was about 12, I remember watching Carry on Up the Khyber. I loved the schoolboy humour of the Carry On films, and on this occasion, I decided to tape the soundtrack on my portable cassette recorder. One scene that caught my attention was of a skinny little fellow acting as a fakir (holy man), who slept on a bed of nails. The die was cast and from that moment, the very mention of India conjured up, among other things, fakirs and beds of nails.  Additionally, two of my favourite books are also inspired by India: Kim by Rudyard Kipling and Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. The inspiration behind Restless Fakir is therefore an amalgam of thoughts and ideas, sprinkled with a pinch of schoolboy humour.
