Cantus Arcticus

Mixed Media (optical fibre, stainless steel, light source, audio/visual).

Munro’s inspiration for this work is the haunting orchestral composition ‘Cantus Arcticus’ by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara (b.1928), which he heard for the first time quite by chance returning from a visit to Waddesdon, where he had been invited to exhibit.  For Munro, the sounds of arctic birdsong interwoven with Rautavaara’s orchestral score created a visual soundscape: shimmering curtains of light suggesting the Aurora Borealis interspersed with the silhouettes of circling birds.

Cantus Arcticus was installed in the Coach House gallery at Waddesdon Manor in March 2013.
