Beach Without Sand is a reconstruction of an idyllic summer week I spent camping with my wife Serena and our children just outside Salcombe in south Devon where I grew up; I have always loved the simple things in life. It is hard to beat sunrise bacon butties, long days at the beach, watching pitch skies for shooting stars, and sleeping under canvas. In the day our favourite place to visit was Bantham, a wide sandy tidal beach protected by sand dunes at the side of a beautiful river estuary. We had a week of those rare, impossibly clear blue skies and long balmy summer days. I remember consciously catching myself, marvelling at how lucky I was to be so happy; on this occasion I was holding my little girl’s hand, ankle deep in a tidal pool looking for crabs and shrimps.
