Beacon

Mixed media (geodesic dome, PET bottles, optical fibre, LED light source)

Beacon is built upon the superstructure of a geodesic dome. I originally came across these domes being made by an independent manufacturer in England; their intended purpose being for use as garden greenhouses. However, as with many of the pieces I create when I am presented with an object for one purpose, multiple alternatives pop into my head simultaneously. Beacon was first created in 2013 to raise awareness of and financial support for the UK charity Cancerkin which supports people affected by breast cancer. The piece was constructed at the top of Long Knoll Hill, behind my studio, for just two days and could be seen from miles around, with the aim of sending a message of hope to suffers and survivors.
